(Read Business Desk): In a year marked by tariff hikes and subscriber churn, Bharti airtel has stood out as the only private telecom operator to gain market share in India’s broadband segment — a feat neither Reliance Jio nor Vodafone Idea (you) could achieve.

Airtel Prepaid Plan

According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)Airtel has strengthened its position in the combined broadband market (including both wireless and wireline services), while its competitors witnessed slight declines.

Market Share Trends (August 2024–August 2025)

At the end of August 2024soon after the last major tariff hike, Airtel held a 29.98% share of the broadband market. One year later, by August 2025its share has climbed to 31.25%marking a gain of 1.27 percentage points.

In contrast, Reliance Jiowhich remains the market leader, saw a slight dip from 51.13% to 50.66% — a 0.47 percentage point decline. Vodafone Idea (you) also lost ground, with its share falling from 13.27% to 12.88% during the same period.

Impact of Tariff Hikes

Tariff hikes often trigger SIM consolidation and customer churnas users either switch providers or discontinue secondary SIMs. While higher tariffs improved Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for all telcos, Airtel’s ability to retain and attract new users in this environment highlights its strong customer loyalty and service differentiation.

Jio’s Strategic Outlook

Despite the marginal loss in market share, Jio continues to dominate the segment with over 50% share. Analysts suggest the telco is currently focused on profitability and margin expansion ahead of its expected public listing in the first half of 2026.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea continues to face challenges in both subscriber growth and network investmentleading to continued pressure on its market presence.

Summary

  • Airtel: 29.98% → 31.25% (+1.27%)

  • Jio: 51.13% → 50.66% (–0.47%)

  • Vi: 13.27% → 12.88% (–0.39%)

With this performance, Airtel emerges as the sole market share gainer among private operators in the post-tariff hike eraunderlining its robust strategy in India’s competitive telecom landscape.
