India Afghanistan Russia: America’s Afghan policy has once again become an issue of international debate. The Trump administration is trying to increase military presence in Afghanistan again and put pressure on the Taliban to return Bagram Air Base to America. But major powers in Asia, including India, have strongly opposed this move. India, together with Russia, China, Iran and Central Asian countries, has given a clear message that the land of Afghanistan will no longer be used as a military base by any foreign power.

India on Tuesday joined Russia, China, Iran and seven other countries to oppose the deployment of any foreign military base or structure in Afghanistan. This statement has come at a time when US President Donald Trump had recently asked the Taliban government to hand over the strategically important Bagram airbase to America.

This discussion took place regarding Afghanistan

The countries participating in the recent meeting of ‘Moscow Forme’ held detailed discussions on peace, stability and development in Afghanistan. The meeting unanimously expressed the view that the presence of any foreign military structure in Afghanistan or its neighboring countries would be detrimental to regional peace and stability. This time for the first time, Foreign Minister of Taliban government, Amir Khan Muttaki participated in this meeting. Just a few weeks ago, Trump had given a statement that the Taliban should return the Bagram airbase to America, because America had built this airbase.

Appeal for united action against terrorism

The countries participating in the meeting agreed that there is a need to further strengthen cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels to combat terrorism. The joint statement said that “Afghanistan should take such concrete steps that terrorism can be completely eliminated and its soil is not used against any neighboring country or global peace.”

India supported independent Afghanistan

Ambassador Vinay Kumar participated in the meeting from the Indian side. According to the Indian Embassy, he said that India is in favor of an independent, peaceful and stable Afghanistan, which can enable social and economic development of its people. He also stressed that a secure and stable Afghanistan is essential not only for Afghan citizens, but also for the entire region and global security. According to analysts, India’s stance is being seen as a balanced and clear diplomatic message towards US President Trump’s ‘military expansion policy’.

Russia assured support to Afghanistan

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the current global situation is very complex, but the Afghan government is making serious efforts towards maintaining stability. He also informed that according to United Nations reports, drug cultivation has now reduced significantly in Afghanistan. Lavrov assured that Russia will provide all possible help to Afghanistan against terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime so that the people there can live a peaceful life. Emphasizing on regional cooperation and development, he said that countries like Russia, China and India believe that Afghanistan should be deeply integrated into the economic and regional connectivity system, so that permanent peace and development can be accelerated in the country.
