Producers of the blockbuster film *Kanthara* and its prequel *Kanthara Chapter 1*, Hombale Films have made an urgent appeal to fans not to imitate the revered Daiva characters of the film, and stressed on the sanctity of the Dhaivaradhane tradition of Tulunadu. The appeal comes after clips went viral on social media in which a fan dressed as a god entered a theater in Tamil Nadu and others acted out scenes outside the cinema hall, which are considered disrespectful to Tulu cultural and spiritual heritage.
In an emotional statement on October 7, Hombale Films emphasized that *Kantara* and *Kantara Chapter 1*, directed by and starring Rishabh Shetty, aims to honor Dhaivaradhane—a deeply spiritual practice of the coastal Tulu community of Karnataka. “Our films celebrate the faith and pride of Tulunadu and showcase its heritage with utmost respect globally,” the statement said. “However, copying the Daiva characters in public disrespects this sacred tradition and deeply hurts the sentiments of the Tulu community.”
The studio expressed gratitude for the immense love received by *Kantara Chapter 1*, which has broken box-office records and grossed over ₹300 crore domestically since its release in September 2025. Nevertheless, it condemned activities by fans such as donning divine costumes or performing rituals informally, saying these were not for “display or imitation” but were rooted in spiritual reverence. Such actions risk undermining the cultural narrative that films attempt to raise, especially after *Kantara* (2022) received national accolades, including a National Award for Shetty.
Homble urged audiences to maintain the sanctity of Dhaivaradhane, a ritual invoking divine spirits central to Tulu identity, and to behave responsibly in public places and theatres. The statement concluded with, “We ask for your support in preserving this priceless heritage,” and the statement was a hit with both fans and cultural supporters.
As the global release of *Kantara Chapter 1* continues, this appeal underlines the need for sensitivity towards regional traditions amidst cinematic excitement, to ensure that the Tulu heritage continues to shine with dignity.
