When you look at the twinkling stars in the night sky, have you ever thought that one of those brightly shining ‘dots’ might actually be a space station? Yes, we are talking about the International Space Station (ISS), which rotates continuously at a very high speed at an altitude of about 400 kilometers from the earth.

How fast does the International Space Station run?

The International Space Station revolves around the Earth at a speed of approximately 28,000 kilometers per hour. At this speed this station completes one revolution of the Earth every 90 minutes. That means it revolves around the Earth about 16 times a day.

This speed is so fast that if any vehicle on earth runs at this speed, it can reach New York from Delhi in just 90 minutes.

What is ISS visible from Earth?

Yes, the International Space Station can be seen with the naked eye from Earth, but the timing and location are right. It usually appears like a bright star in the sky in the morning before sunrise or in the evening after sunset.
This star slowly moves in the sky without twinkling and disappears within a few minutes.

NASA and many other space agencies also provide websites and mobile apps for its tracking, through which you can know when and how long the ISS will be visible over your city.

Why is the International Space Station special?

The ISS is a joint international project involving the space agencies of the United States (NASA), Russia (Roscosmos), Europe (ESA), Japan (JAXA), and Canada (CSA). It was launched in 1998 and has been operating continuously with human presence since then.

In this, scientists conduct experiments in microgravity i.e. the void of space, which is not possible on Earth. Its experiments have a major contribution in fields like medicine, biology, weather, earth studies and space technology.

Who lives in it?

6 to 7 astronauts can live in the ISS at a time. They stay there for 6 months and vary according to missions. This station runs entirely on solar energy and its wings (solar panels) are as big as a football field.

Will common people be able to go in future?

With the increasing trend of space tourism, it is now becoming possible that common people can also visit the space station in the coming decades. Some private companies are working in this direction.
