Forget your credit or debit card PIN? Worried about not receiving OTPs? Don’t worry — soon you won’t need either to make a credit card payment.

Payment service provider Razorpay has introduced biometric authentication for card-based transactions, eliminating the need for one-time passwords (OTPs). The feature, launched in partnership with Yes Bank, was announced by Razorpay CEO Harshil Mathur at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2025.

Explaining the move, Mathur said that while card payments traditionally required entering an OTP or PIN, delays and network issues often led to transaction failures. “One challenge with OTPs is that they sometimes don’t arrive on time, or the network doesn’t work, causing around 5 to 10 per cent of payments to fail,” he noted.

To solve this, Razorpay has introduced a seamless biometric alternative. “Now, when you make a payment using a card, instead of an OTP, you simply show your face, and the transaction is completed through Face ID. If the phone has a fingerprint sensor, it will use that instead,” Mathur explained.

He said the method offers dual benefits — greater security and higher success rates. “It is more secure and ensures a better success rate. This is the next generation of payments that will bring India on par with global standards, and even ahead, in how payments are authorised,” Mathur added.

The launch marks another step forward in India’s digital payments evolution, highlighting the fintech sector’s focus on security, innovation, and user convenience.
