Have you ever wondered how much fuel comes in a flight's tank and what is its mileage?
What is the capacity of the fuel tank?
The amount of fuel filled in a flight depends on the size and model of the aircraft. For example:
- The fuel tank capacity of the Airbus A380 is approximately 323,591 litres.
- Boeing 747 can be filled with up to 182,000 liters of fuel.
- Whereas small planes hold only 4000 to 5000 liters of fuel in their tanks.
- The tank capacity of mid-sized aircraft is between 26,000 to 30,000 litres.
What is the mileage of a flight?
While cars and bikes run several kilometers on one litre, a flight requires a lot of fuel to fly. Boeing 747 requires about 12 liters of fuel to fly one kilometer. On an average, this flight covers a distance of 900 km in an hour and consumes approximately 2400 liters of fuel. That means 2.6 liters of fuel is spent for a flight of one kilometer.
What happens if the sky runs out of fuel?
The flight has an advanced indicator system that tracks the amount of fuel. The pilot gets an immediate alert when the fuel is low. After this the pilot gives this information to the control room. When needed, the control room sends a fuel tanker plane into the air.
