WhatsApp may soon introduce a feature that will allow users to chat without sharing their mobile numbers. This new update will allow you to reserve a username, which will replace your mobile number. This means anyone can now message you using your username instead of your phone number.
A glimpse of this feature has been seen in the Android beta version of WhatsApp. It is expected to be released to all users in the coming months. This new feature will be similar to the BB ID previously used in BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), where only a username was required for messaging.
According to reports, a new 'Reserve Username' option will now appear in profile settings. This will allow users to create and save their username. If you hide your mobile number, random people will not be able to send you messages without permission. WhatsApp will also ensure that no one can create usernames with the words 'www' or website, to prevent fake profiles or spam.
Privacy and security will be strengthened.
Usernames will be allowed to use letters, numbers, and special symbols. Each username will also have a unique key, which you can share with your friends or family to avoid messages from strangers. This feature will further strengthen user privacy and security.
However, according to reports, Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, is planning to further expand its AI and ad-based model on the platform starting in December. This may raise concerns for some users about privacy and advertising.
Currently, WhatsApp supports end-to-end encryption, which keeps your chats secure. However, some other Indian apps, such as Zoho's Arattai, only provide encryption for calls. With the introduction of the new username feature, WhatsApp not only provides a more personal and easy chatting experience.
