Two Indian men have been sentenced to five years and one month in prison, along with 12 strokes of the cane, for assaulting and robbing two sex workers during their holiday in Singapore.
Arokkiyasami Daison, 23, and Rajendran Mayilarasan, 27, pleaded guilty to charges of voluntarily causing hurt during the robbery on Oct. 3, according to The Straits Times.
The court heard that the pair arrived in Singapore on April 24 for a vacation.
Just two days later, while walking in the Little India area, they encountered an unnamed man who offered to connect them with sex workers and gave them contact details for two women, Malay Mail reported.
The tourists then lured the women into hotel rooms and robbed them of their money.
Later that evening, they met the first victim in a hotel room. Once inside, they bound her hands and feet with clothing, slapped her, and stole her jewelry, S$2,000 (US$1,545) in cash, her passport, and several bank cards.
Around 11 p.m. that same night, they met the second victim at another hotel.
The men dragged her by the arms, with Mayilarasan covering her mouth to stop her from screaming.
They stole S$800 in cash, two mobile phones, and her passport, then threatened her not to leave the room until they returned.
The crimes came to light the next day when the second victim alerted local police.
During sentencing, both men pleaded for leniency.
Singapore enforces mandatory caning for certain violent crimes, including robbery, and is known for its tough penalties for offenses involving physical harm.
