“I welcome the chaos,” Swift said in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on Tuesday. “The rule of show business is, if it’s the first week of my album release, and you’re saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping.”
She acknowledged that while she respects “subjective opinions on art,” everyone is entitled to feel however they want about a piece of entertainment. She also explained that her music may not always resonate with everyone right away, as personal experiences often shape how listeners connect with her songs.
Released on Oct. 3, “The Life of a Showgirl” broke opening-week sales records previously held by Adele’s 2015 album “25,” according to The New York Times.
However, the album has sparked mixed reviews. For instance, English journalist Alexis Petridis of The Guardian wrote that the album lacks “undeniable hooks,” suggesting a sense of creative exhaustion in Swift’s writing. Meanwhile, American music journalist Amanda Petrusich of The New Yorker described the album as “missing some essential dynamism.”
