Synopsis

A powerful 6.9-magnitude offshore earthquake struck the southern Philippines, impacting the same region hit by a 7.4-magnitude quake days earlier. The tremor, originating from the Philippine Trench, caused significant shaking and prompted evacuations, though the immediate tsunami threat has passed. Damage to buildings was reported, including cracks at an international airport.

A new offshore earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9, struck the same southern region in Philippines which was hit by a 7.4-magnitude quake on Friday morning. Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology chief Teresito Bacolcol told news agency AP that Friday night’s earthquake that jolted Manay town in Davao Oriental province was caused by movement in the same fault line, the Philippine Trench, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

According to authorities, the tremor struck at 7.12 pm, prompting the Philippine seismology office to warn of "life-threatening wave heights" and urge coastal residents to "immediately evacuate to higher grounds or move farther inland".

Tsunami warning for Philippines

The powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake has triggered a fresh tsunami warning for the region hours after an earlier warning. The largest aftershock recorded so far—one of over 300 tremors—struck less than 10 hours after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the Pacific coast of Mindanao, the southern major island of the Philippines, claiming at least six lives. The quake originated from movement along a shallow fault just 10 kilometres (6 miles) beneath the surface, according to a TOI report.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu warned that dangerous waves could affect areas within 300 kilometres (186 miles) of the epicentre. Some Philippine coasts could see waves up to 3 metres (10 feet) above normal tide levels, while smaller surges were possible in Indonesia and Palau.

Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, cautioned that tsunami waves could strike six coastal provinces, from Davao Oriental onward, up to two hours after the 9:43 a.m. earthquake. He urged residents to move immediately to higher ground or further inland, away from vulnerable shorelines.

“We urge these coastal communities to be on alert and immediately evacuate to higher grounds until further notice,” Alejandro said in a video news briefing. “Owners of boats in harbours and those in the coastal areas...should secure their boats and move away from the waterfronts,” he said. The Philippines is still recovering from a Sept. 30 earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 that left at least 74 people dead and displaced thousands of people in the central province of Cebu, particularly Bogo city and outlying towns.

7.4-magnitude earthquake jolts Philippines

A powerful offshore earthquake preliminarily measured at magnitude 7.6, struck off the southern Philippine province of Davao Oriental on Friday morning. At least five people were killed, including two patients who died of heart attacks at a hospital during the earthquake and a resident who was hit by debris in Mati city in Davao Oriental, Ednar Dayanghirang, regional director of the government's Office of Civil Defense, told The Associated Press by telephone.

The threat of a tsunami has passed in the Philippines and Indonesia after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, warning agency said earlier in the day. Videos on social media captured the quake’s immediate aftermath. In one clip from Tagum City Davao Hospital, chaos unfolded as staff and patients scrambled to evacuate while tremors shake the building.

Another video showed an office or building interior where files and boxes topple from tables, tubelights swaying dangerously, and lights flickering out. Employees are seen ducking under desks, trying to protect themselves from falling debris.

On the streets, residents struggled to stay upright, some dropping to their hands and knees as the ground quakes violently beneath them, a stark testament to the tremor's intensity. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that it was expecting damage and aftershocks from the temblor, which was centered at sea about 43 kilometers (27 miles) east of Manay town in Davao Oriental province and was caused by movement in the Philippine Trench at a depth of 23 kilometers (14 miles).

Office of Civil Defense deputy administrator Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said that several buildings sustained cracks in their walls, including an international airport in Davao city, but it remained operational without any flights being canceled.
