A big change may soon be seen in India’s internet sector. Starlink internet service operated by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is now preparing for its operation in India. This satellite-based broadband service claims to provide fast and stable internet connectivity not only in cities, but also in rural and inaccessible areas.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is an ambitious project of SpaceX, which provides high-speed broadband internet through thousands of small satellites (Low Earth Orbit Satellites) in Earth orbit. Its specialty is that it eliminates the need for traditional cable or fiber networks, making it easily accessible even in remote areas.
When will the service start in India?
If sources are to be believed, the process of government approval required for Starlink to operate in India is in the final stages. The company has already submitted the application to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and final negotiations for the license are underway. It is expected that Starlink service may start in India in the first quarter of 2025.
What will be the internet speed and price?
According to initial data from Starlink, users in India can get speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps.
Speed: Minimum 50 Mbps and Maximum 250 Mbps
Latency: Around 20 to 40 milliseconds, which is suitable for gaming and streaming
price:
The starter kit (dish, router, cable) can cost around ₹40,000 to ₹50,000.
Monthly fees are estimated between ₹2,500 to ₹3,000.
However, the company is also considering offering subsidy or EMI options keeping in mind the local prices in India.
Who will benefit most?
Starlink’s service will most benefit areas that do not yet have access to fiber or mobile networks. There are thousands of villages in India where internet connectivity is very weak. In such a situation, Starlink can prove to be a game-changer for those areas.
What does the government say?
The government’s stance at present is cautious but positive. India has strict regulations regarding data security, foreign ownership and localization, and Starlink is likely to be licensed under these conditions.
