US ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as part of efforts to address current challenges in the bilateral relationship and boost ties under President Donald Trump's administration.
"Glad to receive Mr Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I'm confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership," Modi posted on X after the meeting. The two leaders could meet again later this month on the sidelines of the ASEAN and East Asia Summits in Malaysia.
Gor, who arrived in India on a six-day visit following his Senate confirmation, also held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
"Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility," Jaishankar wrote on X.
The two had earlier met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 24. During his visit, Gor is accompanied by Michael J Rigas, US deputy secretary for management and resources, according to the US State Department.
"Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met US Ambassador-designate @SergioGor earlier today. They had a productive exchange on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities. FS wished Amb-designate Gor all success for his assignment," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.
Trump's choice of Gor - a close political aide and member of his inner circle - as ambassador to India is being seen as potentially significant. His proximity to Trump could enable more direct communication on New Delhi's concerns and help bridge differences amid the current turbulence in the partnership.
