risks of tramadol

Danger of Tramadol: A study recently published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine has raised questions about the safety and effectiveness of tramadol, a common painkiller. This medication is used to relieve pain, but it has limited benefits as well as long-term use may increase the risk of heart diseases. Experts say its potential risks may outweigh the benefits for many patients.

The study analyzed 19 clinical trials involving 6,506 participants, whose average age was 58 years. These individuals took tramadol for 2 to 16 weeks for chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, nerve damage, and back pain. The results showed that the drug provided modest pain relief, which was not clinically significant. Critically, those taking tramadol had double the risk of cardiovascular problems such as chest pain, coronary artery disease and heart failure compared to placebo. Common mild side effects included nausea, dizziness, constipation, and drowsiness.

Tramadol dosages in 2023

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 51.6 million adults suffer from chronic pain, for 17.1 million of whom it affects their daily activities. 16 million doses of tramadol administered in 2023. It was previously considered safer than stronger opioids, but patients are now being advised to look for better alternatives.
