Strictness on cough syrup, Delhi government immediately bans its sale, DCGI alerts all states

Delhi government has adopted a strict stance after the case of death of 22 children due to consumption of ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh has given clear instructions to all government and private hospitals that this syrup should neither be prescribed nor sold. The minister said that this step is immediately necessary to protect the safety and health of children.

Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh said in the press conference, “We have taken this strict step following the guidelines of the Central Government. No tender has been given to the company manufacturing this syrup for the last six months. Instructions have been issued to all hospitals and chemist shops to completely ban this medicine.”

Crackdown on Sreson Pharma owner

Meanwhile, legal action has also intensified. Chhindwara’s Parasia Court has sent Sresan Pharma owner Ranganathan to 10-day police custody. Ranganathan was produced in the court on Friday. Chhindwara Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested Ranganathan from Chennai. After his arrest, he was medically examined and now he is being brought to Chhindwara.

Strict instructions from drugs controller

Meanwhile, legal action in the matter has also intensified. Chhindwara’s Parasia Court has sent Sresan Pharma owner Ranganathan to 10-day police custody. He was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Chennai. After the arrest, medical examination was completed and now he is being brought to Chhindwara. Meanwhile, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has also issued strict instructions to all states and union territories to ensure the quality of medicines. DCGI chief Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi wrote in a letter on October 7, “Inspecting the raw materials and finished products used in the manufacturing of medicines is extremely important.” He has asked all state drug controllers to ensure strict compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 and to take immediate action against any suspicious company or product.
