In a post going viral on the internet, an eye surgeon shared the case of a 26-year-old man brought in due to a sudden, painless loss of vision in his right eye after heavy weight lifting at the gym. The man wasn't able to even count his fingers from the right eye while the left remained unaffected.
Upon examination, it was revealed that he had a dense pre-retinal haemorrhage and vitreous haemorrhage and was diagnosed with Valsalva Retinopathy . What does it mean and how does it happen? Know below!

What is Valsalva Retinopathy?

Valsalva Retinopathy is a form of retinal haemorrhage caused by a sudden increase in pressure in the chest and abdomen, leading to ruptured retinal capillaries and a preretinal haemorrhage. It occurs when there is a sudden pressure in the abdomen which is then transmitted to the venous system, raising the pressure in the veins of the head and neck, including those connected within the eye. Thus, there is a sudden rupture of small retinal capillaries.
What causes Valsalva Retinopathy?
This comes with a painless vision loss usually occurring after activities such as coughing, heavy lifting or straining, vomiting, constipation, sexual intercourse, and other physical activities.
The diagnosis for the condition can be made with the help of patient history, fundus examination (performed in the case of the man), or an optical coherence tomography scan.
However, the condition can be resolved with proper medical attention within weeks or months. Treatment administered by the doctors includes conservative management to see if the eye blood clears on its own, using a YAG laser to disperse the blood, limiting strenuous activity or finding any underlying health causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure and more.
What happened to the man?

Well, while the doctor considered a YAG laser hyaloidotomy, he eventually decided to treat the eye conservatively. Over 6-8 weeks, the haemorrhage resolved on its own with the vision returning to normal. During this time, the patient was advised to avoid excessive straining exercises.
