Kolkata . West Bengal Chemists and Druggists Association (BCDA) has directed drug sellers across the state to stop the sale and purchase of this syrup with immediate effect. This is the same Coldrif Cup syrup which is considered to be the enemy of children’s life. Three more children died in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday. Five children are still fighting the battle between life and death in Nagpur. After which, as a precautionary measure, the sale and purchase of this medicine has been banned in West Bengal also.

The Bengal State Drug Control Board has ordered the purchase of these chemicals only from approved vendors and submission of test reports in certified laboratories. There has been panic in many states after the deaths linked to this syrup manufactured by the Tamil Nadu based company. Investigation has found that the syrup contains chemicals like propylene glycol, glycerin and sorbitol, whose quality is being questioned. BCDA Secretary Prithvi Basu said that the batch which is being linked to the incident in Madhya Pradesh has not reached West Bengal, but as a precautionary measure all drug sellers have been asked to stop selling this brand. He said that a meeting has been called with drug sellers on October 11, in which strict implementation of this advice will be discussed.

Earlier, the Arunachal Pradesh government banned the sale and use of Coldrif cough syrup. Arunachal Pradesh Drug Control has issued an advisory banning the sale, distribution and storage of Coldrif cough syrup manufactured by Shreesan Pharmaceutical. The Drug Control Administration of Telangana also issued public warning – stop use notice against two cough syrups Relife and Respifresh TR. Adulteration of a poisonous substance has been found in both these syrups. Drug inspectors found that many medicines were prepared from this substandard chemical. The investigation team found that the company did not have any stock of propylene glycol at that time. The company also did not have any invoice for the purchase of chemicals. This deepened the suspicion that the company tried to hide the documents by quickly disposing of the chemical.
