Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, had a mixed season in 2025. Despite reaching the playoffs, MI’s campaign ended early after losing the Eliminator to Gujarat Titans (GT).
Though the franchise brought in a number of new players who had promise, their general performance was disappointing. When the IPL 2026 auction is near, MI management might consider rebuilding and ensuring better balance in the team. A number of players can be released to open spaces for new players and enhance squad depth.
5 Players MI May Release Ahead of IPL 2026 Auction
Deepak Chahar
Right-arm pacer Deepak Chahar may be one of the first names MI release before IPL 2026. Since joining the side after moving from Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Chahar was unable to deliver a strong blow. He took just 11 wickets in 14 games, unable to bring early strikes with the new ball.
Considering his cost and patchy form, MI may want to keep a youthful powerplay bowler alongside Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah for more balance in the pace attack.

Allah Ghazanfar
Afghanistan leg-spinner Allah Ghazanfar was a benchwarmer all season in 2025. He didn't even receive a single game despite signing at a reasonable price. With Mitchell Santner spearheading the spin attack and other domestic players impressing, retaining Ghazanfar looks improbable.
His recent average performances in international and domestic leagues have also put a question mark on his retention in MI.
Reece Topley
England seamer Reece Topley is also likely to be released prior to the upcoming auction. He played only one match in IPL 2025 and did not make any significant contribution.
With a pace-oriented bowling unit already in hand, MI might rather spend money on a young Indian pacer who can provide both consistency and long-term returns.

Lizaad Williams
South African seamer Lizaad Williams played not a single game in the 2025 season, and he mostly spent time in the nets. His dearth of opportunities renders him a probable release as MI seeks to include more game-fit players in the team.
Karn Sharma
Seasoned leg-spinner Karn Sharma featured in six games, claiming seven wickets, but had issues with being predictable with his bowling. Though he has experience, MI may be looking for an attacking spinner who can restrict runs and perform under pressure.
Mumbai Indians Eye Fresh Core for IPL 2026
The Mumbai Indians have long had a reputation for taking bold decisions and making intelligent auctions. Releasing underperforming players may help the team release funds and go for upcoming talents. With the IPL 2026 auction promising new opportunities, the MI fans can look for a stronger and more balanced team in the coming season.
