Srinagar: The BJP on Sunday announced the names of three candidates, including its Jammu and Kashmir president Sat Pal Sharma, for the elections to four Rajya Sabha seats in the Union Territory. The two other candidates are Ali Mohammed Mir and Rakesh Mahajan. Sharma served as a BJP party president in J&K from 2015 to 2018 and also served as a minister in the PDP-BJP coalition government between 2015 and 2018. Mahajan is the vice-president of BJP's J&K unit while Mir is among the senior most party workers in Kashmir, who lost the 2024 assembly election from the Khan Sahib constituency of Budgam.
The Election Commission of India has issued three separate notifications for the elections to four RS seats. The elections, scheduled for October 24, will fill four Rajya Sabha seats from J&K that have remained vacant since February 2021 as there was no elected assembly in J&K till October 2024, necessary for the Rajya Sabha polls.
The National Conference-Congress combine has an edge in three seats while BJP has in one, going by their strength in the assembly. The ruling alliance, led by the NC along with Congress and independents, has 53 seats in the 90-member assembly. The BJP, which has 28 members in J&K assembly, is sure of winning at least one seat.
