
Kolkata, 13 October (Read News). Police have arrested one more accused in the gang rape case of a medical student in Durgapur. With this, till now a total of four accused have been caught by the police, while the search for another absconding accused is going on. The fourth accused arrested is also said to be a local resident. However, the police have not yet revealed his name.
By Sunday, the police had arrested three accused named Sheikh Riazuddin, Apu Bauri and Firdous Sheikh. After presenting them in Durgapur court, they have been taken on remand for 10 days.
According to police sources, after presenting the three accused arrested on Sunday in the court, the police raided the bushy area near the college with the help of a drone and arrested the fourth accused. Police say that out of the five main accused in the incident, four have been arrested and the search for the remaining one has been intensified.
Police sources also said that the role of the victim’s classmate, who was with her on the night of the incident, also seems suspicious. The investigating officers are investigating his statements and activities.
The incident occurred around 9 pm on Friday night, when the medical student from Odisha had gone out for a walk outside the college campus with her male classmate. Meanwhile, a group of local youth surrounded both of them, forcibly dragged the student to a nearby bush area and gang-raped her.
On receiving the information, the victim’s family members reached Durgapur and lodged a complaint with the police, on the basis of which investigation was started.
Political activity has intensified in the state regarding the incident. Opposition parties have raised questions on the safety of women in Bengal. At the same time, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that the state government follows the policy of “zero tolerance” in cases of crime. He said, “What happened is condemnable. I have instructed the police to take strict action, no criminal will be spared.”
Meanwhile, the victim’s father said that he no longer wants to keep his daughter in Bengal and has decided to take her to Odisha for security reasons.
