Jack Wilshere has been confirmed as the new manager of Luton Town. It comes after Matt Bloomfield was sacked by the League One club last week.

Bloomfield held tenure with the Hatters for nine months before he was handed his marching orders after a run of poor form which left Luton 11th in the league standings - with five wins and as many losses from the club's opening 11 fixtures. A statement from the club read: "Performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One have fallen below the levels expected." In the wake of Bloomfield's exit, Alex Lawless took up the reins as an interim manager for Luton's 3-1 loss to Cambridge United in the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening.

But now, Arsenal legend Wilshere has been announced as the club's brand-new permanent head coach. The ex-England international said: "It's a huge honour and a privilege to be named Luton Town manager.

"It feels like a full-circle moment for me. I was eight when I first came to Luton as a boy, so I guess you could say it's fate that my first full-time club managerial position is at this club. I couldn't be more delighted to be here - I can't wait to manage this football club."

Over the course of ten years with the Gunners between 2008 and 2018, he racked up 14 goals and 28 assists in 197 appearances. Wilshere then joined West Ham in 2018, where he spent two years, before joining AFC Bournemouth.

A brief spell with the Cherries was then proceeded by a move to Danish side Aarhus Gymnastikforening in 2022. With just 14 appearances to his name, Wilshere called time on his playing career in July of the same year, before securing a head-coach role with Arsenal's Under-18s set-up.

He was able to guide his club to the final of the 2022/23 FA Youth Cup during his first season in charge, albeit losing to West Ham. However, almost a year ago to the day, Wilshere left north London once again to join Norwich City as a first-team coach under the tutelage of Johannes Hoff Thorpu.

When the Dane was sacked in April after a dismal run of form, Wilshere took up the responsibilities of interim manager, before Liam Manning took the full-time position two months later. His appointment at the Hatters is his first senior role as a manager.

Wilshere is also their third manager since January, when Rob Edwards was sacked and replaced by Bloomfield. Last season, they suffered a second consecutive relegation to tumble into League One for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign.

Town host Mansfield Town this weekend before travelling to Sixfields to face Northampton Town. There is still plenty to play for in their campaign as they are only five points of the play-off places
