Health Desk. Drinking warm milk before sleeping at night has been an old part of Indian tradition and Ayurveda. It not only improves sleep but also helps in digestion, bone strength and mental peace. But the question arises that how much milk should be drunk before sleeping and at what time? Drinking milk excessively or at the wrong time can cause harm to the body instead of benefit.
How much milk should I drink?
According to health experts, an adult person should take about 200 to 250 ml before sleeping at night. Drinking milk (about one glass) is sufficient. This quantity provides the body with essential nutrients like protein, calcium and tryptophan, which help in good sleep. For children, this quantity can be reduced according to age, such as 100 to 150 ml.
What is the right time to drink milk?
The best time to drink milk at night is about 30 to 60 minutes before sleeping. This gives time to the digestion process and the body becomes relaxed. Drinking milk too late such as right before sleeping or while lying in bed can lead to problems like gas, indigestion or acidity.
Which kind of milk is best?
Drinking lukewarm milk at night is considered most appropriate. It helps in relaxing the body. If desired, a pinch of turmeric, saffron or cardamom can also be added to it for taste and nutrition. Diabetes patients should take milk without sugar, while people suffering from obesity should use low-fat or toned milk.
Is night milk beneficial for everyone?
Although milk is beneficial for health, people with lactose intolerance (allergy to milk) should avoid it or consume soy, almond or oat milk as alternatives. Apart from this, people who frequently complain of gas or flatulence should also take milk at night only after consulting a doctor.
