Working out in the gym is beneficial for the body, but sometimes a small mistake can cause serious problems. Recently, a 27-year-old man experienced a shocking incident. He suddenly lost vision in one eye while deadlifting. This incident surprised even doctors.

What is the whole story?
In a reel on the social media platform Instagram, Dr. Ashish Markan explains that the young man was deadlifting in the gym. The weight was very heavy, so he exerted all his strength and strained while holding his breath. Within seconds, he realized that he had lost vision in one eye. After examination, it was discovered that he had a rare disorder called Valsalva Retinopathy.

What is Valsalva Retinopathy?
It is an eye problem in which a sudden increase in pressure causes the tiny blood vessels in the retina to rupture. This happens when a person holds their breath while lifting heavy weights or exerting excessive force. As a result, blood builds up in the eye, making vision difficult. While this problem resolves on its own within a few weeks in most cases, it can become serious if left unattended.

How does lifting heavy weights affect the eyes?

When we perform deadlifts, squats, or other heavy exercises, the pressure inside the body suddenly increases. This pressure can directly reach the delicate blood vessels in the eyes. If a person continuously holds their breath or strains incorrectly, it can cause bleeding in the eyes. This is why even gym-goers are not completely safe from this risk.

Why shouldn't you hold your breath while working out?
Many people lift weights while working out to stabilize their spine and increase strength. This is called the Valsalva Maneuver. Although this technique can improve performance, it also rapidly increases pressure in the body, which can be harmful to the eyes.

Don't Ignore These Symptoms
If a person suddenly experiences painless blurred vision, sees shadows or a "black screen" before their eyes, they should immediately consult an eye specialist. Such symptoms may indicate bleeding or increased pressure in the retina. Timely treatment can prevent permanent damage.

Keep These Things in Mind
Learn proper technique from a trainer before lifting very heavy weights.

Exhale slowly instead of holding your breath while lifting.
If you experience dizziness or blurred vision, stop the exercise immediately.
Understand your limits and avoid undue stress.
This incident is a warning to all gym-goers. Fitness is important, but proper technique and being mindful of your body's limitations are even more crucial.
