The West Indies batter John Campbell scored his maiden Test century in style, with a six straight to the gallery against Ravindra Jadeja. He scored his century on his 174th ball, with his innings comprising 9 boundaries and 3 sixes. Campbell's maiden Test hundred came after a wait of 50 innings, the second by a West Indies player after Trevor Goddard (58).

Most innings played by a West Indian to reach his maiden hundred:

Players' Name Innings
Trevor Goddard 58
John Campbell 50
Darren Ganga 44
Imrul Kayes 32
Bob Simpson 31

The 32-year-old Campbell, however, ended a 12-year wait for a West Indies batter to score a century against India. In 2011 tour of West Indies, debutant Kirk Edwards was the one to score a hundred against MS Dhoni's India.

However, Campbell's century ended the West Indies' wait since 2023 to score a century. Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored an unbeaten 207 against Zimbabwe in the first Test at Bulawayo in February 2023.

Apart from that, Campbell became the first West Indies opener to score a century againt India after Darren Ganga (135) scored one in Basseterre in 2006. Notably, Wavell Hinds scored a hundred at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, the first by any West Indian against India, in 2002.

India’s bowlers have maintained discipline, but John Campbell and Shai Hope have stood firm with determined resistance. Scoring hasn’t been easy, yet the duo has managed to hold off the relentless attack. During the opening hour, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj were all in action.

Near the end of that spell, Jadeja switched to bowling around the wicket to Campbell, creating a few close chances by troubling both edges. Still, the breakthrough didn’t come. The pair has now added 35 more runs, taking their stand to 173, with Campbell celebrating his maiden Test century as West Indies inch closer, just 62 runs behind India.
