Chamoli: The Valley of Flowers, located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, has turned into a snowy wonderland after an untimely snowfall this October. The entire valley now blanketed in white. This popular sightseeing destination, known globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its colorful and rare Himalayan flowers that bloom between June and September.
But this year, nature had other plans. Snowfall arrived earlier than expected, covering the valley even before the tourist season officially ended. While the valley is mostly known for its vibrant flower species like blue poppies, Himalayan bellflowers, and orchids, this snow-covered version of the valley has its own charm.
Seasonal closure on 31 October
Forest officials have now confirmed that the Valley of Flowers will be closed for tourists from October 31. This is a regular seasonal closure that happens every year before winter fully sets in. Due to heavy snowfall and dropping temperatures, it becomes risky for people to visit or trek in the area.
Officials have also reminded tourists to stay cautious, as the snow can make the trekking paths slippery and difficult to walk on. Those planning to visit the area before the closing date should come well-prepared with warm clothes and proper trekking gear.
Around eight to ten tourists are visiting the valley each day
Local tour operator Sanjay Sati shared that early snowfall has boosted tourist interest, with visitors arriving daily to enjoy the snowy scenery. Forest Range Officer Chetna Kandpal confirmed that around eight to ten tourists are visiting the valley each day. The valley will officially close for visitors on October 31.
Now the valley will open again in the month of June
The Valley of Flowers opens again in June, after the snow melts and the flowers start blooming once more. Until then, it will remain closed to ensure visitor safety and to allow the ecosystem to rest and recover during the winter season.
