Coffee… Be it the start of the morning or a break from fatigue, for most people it has become not just a drink but a habit. But have you ever wondered whether your favorite coffee is playing with your health?
Many recent international health researches have revealed that excessive consumption of coffee, especially unfiltered coffee, can increase LDL (bad cholesterol) in the body. This is a serious sign increasing the risk of heart diseases.
What does the research say?
Studies conducted at the Institute of Health in Norway and the United States found that people who drank 3 to 5 cups of unfiltered coffee (such as French press, espresso, Turkish coffee) daily had higher levels of LDL cholesterol. The reason for this is “cafestol” — an oil found in coffee beans that is found in high amounts in unfiltered coffee.
Cafestol increases the process of cholesterol formation in the body, which can create a risk of blockage in the arteries.
Which coffee types pose greater risk?
french press coffee
Espresso shots (when taken in excessive amounts)
Turkish Style Coffee
Instant coffee (if more sugar or cream is added)
However, filtered drip coffee or coffee made with paper filters contains negligible amounts of cafestol, making the risk less.
Should everyone give up coffee?
No. Coffee isn’t entirely the villain. The antioxidants, caffeine and other compounds present in it increase energy, bring alertness and some research even says that coffee in limited quantities can also protect against diseases like diabetes and Parkinson’s.
But things get worse when the quantity and method are wrong.
