The health of the brain is very important for our overall lifestyle. Today’s fast-paced life, increasing stress and wrong eating habits are having a negative impact on the brain. In this context, the effect of sugar on the functioning of the brain has also become a topic of discussion among scientists.

Is sugar dangerous for our brain?

Sugar i.e. glucose is the primary energy source for our body and brain. About 20% of the brain’s energy comes from glucose. But, if the amount of sugar becomes excessive or is of the wrong type, it can interfere with the functioning of the brain and weaken the memory.

Difference between right and wrong sugar for brain

Correct Sugar:
Naturally occurring sugars such as lactose found in fruits, honey, and milk. These sugars slowly dissolve in the blood and provide continuous energy to the brain. Apart from this, these sugar sources also contain vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, which are helpful in protecting the brain.

Wrong Sugar:
Processed sugar (such as white sugar, candy, cakes, hidden sugar in packaged foods) dissolves quickly in the blood and increases blood sugar. This causes inflammation in the brain and the functioning of neurotransmitters is affected. Due to this, along with weakening of memory, problems like migraine and depression can also increase.

Relationship between sugar and brain disease

The latest research shows that a diet high in sugar may increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. High sugar levels in the blood damage the nerve cells of the brain and reduce the ability to learn and memory.

Right ways to consume sugar for the brain

Include fruits in your diet – fruits like orange, apple, banana, berries.

Limit use of natural sweeteners like honey or jaggery

Avoid overly processed and packaged foods

Include omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants in the diet

Drink balanced amount of water, so that the brain remains hydrated

Doctors’ suggestion

Experts say that “For brain health, sugar intake should neither be less nor more. Choosing the right amount and the right source keeps the brain sharp and healthy. Avoid fast food, packaged sweet items and rely on fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Turmeric filters out the stubborn cholesterol accumulated in the veins and also boosts immunity.
