The Filmfare Awards have been making headlines recently but not for the reasons one would expect. The awards ceremony which is considered one of the most prestigious in the Indian film industry has been criticized for its choices. One of the most notable criticisms comes from The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen. What did Sudipto Sen say? Sudipto Sen has slammed the Filmfare Awards for honoring Kiran Raos film Laapataa Ladies calling it plagiarized. Taking to his Instagram account Sudipto shared a long note on Filmfare Awards and posted a caption which read I never expect anything great from any Indian cinema establishment particularly when it is media or cinema journalism. They are mostly enamored by the glamor and rich world of the stars exactly the way people from villages and small cities gather in front of Mr. Bachchans or SRKs house. They actually have zero contribution towards Indian cinema cinema art contrary to the way world media does for world cinemas. His note mentioned this year Filmfare truly is an exposé of Indian ‘nouvelle vague A blatantly plagiarised film a film which is a tutorial of brutality and a film which did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours took away most of the crowns. We are spared from faking smiles faking camaraderie and indulging in sycophancy. He expressed happiness that his film community isnt part of this tamasha in the name of Indian Cinema and its hypocrisies. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sudipto Sen (@sudipto_sen) More about Laapataa Ladies Laapataa Ladies is a Hindi film that tells the story of two young women who escape from a train and navigate a new world exploring themes of identity freedom and womens empowerment. Story Highlights Sudipto Sen criticized the Filmfare Awards for honoring Laapataa Ladies calling it “blatantly plagiarized” and part of a “tamasha” in the name of cinema. He claimed the film “did not survive the box office for more than 72 hours” yet swept major awards. Sen expressed disappointment with how Indian cinema establishments and media prioritize glamour over genuine art. He also suggested The Kerala Story was unfairly sidelined despite critical recognition as part of systemic biases. Sudipto Sen the director of The Kerala Story has taken aim at the recent Filmfare Awards lambasting the institution for recognizing a film he believes lacks originality. Without naming Laapataa Ladies directly Sen referred to a “blatantly plagiarised film” that dominated the awards despite poor box office endurance.
