South Africa’s India-origin left-arm spin bowler Senuran Muthuswamy created history in the first Test vs Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. After claiming six wickets in the first innings on Day 2 of the Test Muthuswamy added five more wickets in the second innings to give the South Africans a huge opportunity to win the game although they conceded a massive 109-run first innings lead. After getting bowled out for 269 in their first innings in reply to Pakistan’s 378 South Africans struck back by bundling out Shan Masood’s side for just 167. Muthuswamy claimed 5/57 in the second innings to go with 6/117 which he claimed in the first. In the process Muthuswamy became the first bowler in 70 years to claimed five wickets in both innings of a Test in Pakistan. The last bowler to achieve this feat was England’s Nick Cook who had picked up 6/65 and 5/18 in the two innings in Karachi back in 1984. Muthuswamy has also become the bowler with best figures in SA vs Pakistan Test matches with a match haul of 11/174 improving on Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali’s 10/114 at Rawalpindi back in 2021.   Senuran Muthusamy with a match-changing spell! West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican with 10/101 was last one to achieve this feat at Multan earlier this year. For Pakistan Babar Azam top-scored with 42 while opener Abdullah Shafique chipped in with 41 as Muthuswamy and Simon Harmer with 4/51 ran through the home side in the second innings. The World Test Championships winners SA still have a tough chase on their hands needing 277 to win in the first Test at Lahore. SA ended the third day at 51 for 2 with opener Ryan Rickleton batting on 29 and first innings centurion Tony de Zorzi unbeaten on 16. Pakistan’s Noman Ali who claimed six wickets in the first innings claimed both the wickets to fall in the second innings – dismissing SA captain Aiden Markram for 3 and Wiaan Mulder for 0. De Zorzi made a battling 104 off 171 balls before the Proteas were dismissed for 269 early on third day. That gave Pakistan a first-innings lead of 109 runs on a wicket where spinners have already picked up 30 wickets. South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada is the only fast bowler so far to take a wicket. South Africa added 53 to its overnight 216 for 6 before Noman (6/112) and off-spinner Sajid Khan (3/98) bowling unchanged finished off the innings. Noman claimed his ninth five-wicket haul in 20 Test matches – the most by any Pakistan left-arm spinner.
