New Delhi: As the rest of India lights lamps to welcome Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali, Goa celebrates the festival with a fiery twist, the burning of Narakasur effigies. It is known as Narakasur Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali. This tradition marks the victory of good over evil. It is symbolised through the slaying of the demon king Narakasur by Lord Krishna and his consort Satyabhama.
The legend behind this celebration is traced back to Goa’s mythological past. Narakasur, the demon ruler of Gomantak (ancient Goa), was the son of Earth Goddess Satyabhama and Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, Varaha. After gaining immense power through a boon from Lord Bramha, Narakasur began terrorising bot mortals and gods and imprisoned 16,000 women. Lord Krishna ultimately defeated him and fulfilled the prophecy that Narakasur would be slain by his mother.
Goa’s tradition discovered better through Narakasur Chaturdashi
According to folklore, Krishna smeared demon’s blood on his forehead after victory and to purify himself took an Abhyang Snan or oil bath. This ritual continues to this day, Goans begin Narakasur Chaturdashi with an early morning oil bath.
The night before Diwali, Goa comes alive with vibrant street parades. Gigantic Narakasur effigies, often as tall as two-storey buildings are carried through the streets.
After the effigy burning, people crush a bitter berry called kareet underfoot, exchange sweets and gifts and gather for festive meals. One can visit Mapusa, Margao, Panjim or Bicholim to truly witness the festival.
