In a bid to promote cleanliness and hygiene along India’s National Highways, the ( NHAI ) has launched a unique initiative under its ‘Special Campaign 5.0’ — the ‘ Clean Toilet Picture Challenge ’. The innovative drive encourages highway users to report dirty toilets at toll plazas and get rewarded for their contribution.

The concept is simple: travelers who come across unhygienic toilets along National Highways can now take action by uploading geo-tagged, time-stamped pictures of such facilities using the latest version of the RajmargYatra app . Along with the photo, users need to provide basic details, including their name, location, Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), and mobile number.

Every valid report made through this app will be eligible for a reward of INR 1,000, credited as FASTag recharge to the linked VRN. The reward is non-transferable and cannot be claimed in cash. The campaign, which runs until 31st October 2025, is applicable across all National Highways in the country.

It is important to note that the initiative is applicable only to toilets constructed, operated, or maintained under NHAI jurisdiction. Facilities at retail fuel stations, dhabas, or other public areas not under NHAI control are excluded. To ensure fairness, each vehicle registration number is eligible for only one reward during the campaign period. Likewise, each toilet facility is eligible for consideration only once per day, irrespective of how many reports are received. If multiple submissions are made for the same toilet on the same day, only the first valid image will be considered.

The NHAI has also outlined strict guidelines to maintain integrity of the reporting process. Only clear, geo-tagged, and time-stamped images captured through the RajmargYatra app will be accepted. Manipulated, duplicate, or previously reported images will be rejected. Verification of entries will be done through AI-assisted screening and manual validation wherever necessary.

This campaign is part of a broader effort under the Government of India’s Special Campaign 5.0, which underscores a commitment to cleanliness, transparency, and efficiency in governance. Beyond toilet cleanliness, NHAI has been working on a wide range of initiatives aimed at enhancing the travelling experience of National Highway users. These include the removal of potholes, beautification of flyovers, proper signage for road safety, pictorial public messaging on flyovers and tunnels, and removal of encroachments along the Right of Way.

By combining citizen participation with technology, NHAI’s Clean Toilet Picture Challenge aims to make National Highways safer, cleaner, and more pleasant for all road users. The reward-based system not only incentivizes travelers to actively report unhygienic conditions but also strengthens accountability in the management of public facilities.

As the campaign continues until the end of October 2025, highway users are encouraged to download the RajmargYatra app, keep an eye out for dirty toilets, and participate in this novel initiative. After all, a clean toilet on the highway is more than a convenience — it is a small step towards a healthier and more hygienic journey for millions of travelers.
