WASPI campaign confirms key date for meeting with MPs in Parliament

WASPI campaigners will be back in Westminster next week to push their case for compensation. They are running a drop-in event in Parliament, where they will meet with MPs to urge them to show their support for payouts. The WASPI campaign (Women Against State Pension Inequality) is one of several groups calling for compensation for the millions of 1950s-born women who were affected when their state pension age increased from 60 to 65 and then 66.

They claim the DWP did not properly inform them of the change, with many women not realising right up until the last minute, ruining their retirement plans. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman previously looked into the matter, concluding there should be payouts for the women, ranging from £1,000 to £2,950.

But the Labour Government announced at the end of last year there would be no compensation for the women. Ministers argued that most women did know of the change and that if they had sent out letters about the state pension change sooner, it would have made little difference.

Despite this setback, the WASPI women are continuing in their fight for compensation. They have applied for a judicial review of the DWP's decision not to compensate, with a court date set for December.

And they will be going to Westminster next week to urge politicians to support their cause. They will be running a drop-in event on Tuesday, October 21, where MPs can turn up and speak to them.

WASPI campaign chair Angela Madden said: "We've had some good responses so far. We're expecting at least 40 MPs to turn up. There will be more than that, as several have it in their diaries but haven't confirmed yet."

The event is an opportunity for the WASPI women to meet with MPs and present their case, and to get politicians who have supported them previously to reaffirm their commitment. They will also have an interactive map up on a screen, showing how widespread the support for the WASPI campaign is among the MPs' constituents.

The campaigners are also hoping to arrange some one-on-one meetings with some of the newer MPs on the day. Many individual MPs support the WASPI cause, including some Labour members.

Some political parties have also consistently made it their policy that the women should get payouts, including the SNP, the Greens and the Liberal Democrats.
