Amazon is reportedly planning a big round of job cuts and the human resources department expected to be the most affected. The HR division called People eXperience and Technology (PXT) internally could see up to 15 per cent of its staff let go according to sources cited by Fortune. Other parts of the company’s consumer business might also face layoffs. The total number of employees who could lose their jobs and the exact timing of the cuts haven’t been confirmed yet. This comes just months after smaller layoffs in Amazon’s consumer devices group Wondery podcast division and AWS. Amazon is also investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The company plans to spend over USD 100 billion in 2025 on capital projects much of it going toward new data centres to support AI infrastructure for its own use and for enterprise clients. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy signals AI-driven workforce changes Amazon CEO Andy Jassy who took over from Jeff Bezos in 2021 has emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) will define the company’s future. In a company-wide memo in June he encouraged employees to adapt to AI and build skills that help improve Amazon’s AI systems. He said: “Those who embrace this change become conversant in AI help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally and deliver for customers will be well-positioned to have high impact and help us reinvent the company.” Under his leadership Amazon has already gone through its largest layoffs ever cutting around 27000 corporate jobs between 2022 and 2023. Those earlier cuts were mainly due to post-pandemic overexpansion and changes in consumer behavior but the current round of job reductions is part of a long-term plan to shift the company toward AI-driven operations.
