New Delhi:- The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global warning regarding three oral liquid medicines made in India. These medicines have been found to be ‘substandard’ and have been confirmed to contain the deadly chemical diethylene glycol, the consumption of which has resulted in local cases of death of children in India.
WHO has issued this medical product alert on the basis of the report received from India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) on October 8, 2025. CDSCO took this step on September 30 after WHO identified local clusters of acute illness and deaths in children in India. The contaminated medicines were reportedly consumed by the affected children.
The three oral liquid medicines found to be contaminated contain active ingredients used to relieve symptoms of common cold, flu or cough. The affected syrups and manufacturing companies are identified as follows:
Production ban and recall begin in India
CDSCO has informed the World Health Organization that no contaminated drugs have been exported from India and there is currently no evidence of illegal exports. CDSCO has confirmed that the concerned state authorities have ordered immediate stoppage of production at these construction sites and suspension of product authorizations.
Apart from this, the process of recalling the contaminated products from the market has also been started. CDSCO has told WHO that at present no evidence has been found of export of contaminated medicines from India.
WHO appeals for international monitoring
Although no evidence of export has been found, WHO has advised all National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) to remain alert. WHO has encouraged consideration of targeted market surveillance, with a particular focus on informal and unregulated supply chains, where products may circulate without detection.
NRAs have also been advised to carefully evaluate the risks associated with any oral liquid medicine produced exclusively from the same manufacturing sites from December 2024 onwards. WHO is working closely with Indian health authorities to monitor the situation, identify the source of contamination and reduce potential public health risks.
