Ashok Leyland announced on Thursday that it has secured a significant order from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings (TNSTUs) for 1,937 buses, further deepening its decades-long association with the state’s public transport network.
The order, one of the largest placed by TNSTU in recent years, will see Ashok Leyland supply a mix of fully built buses and chassis configurations suited for town, mofussil, and State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) operations, according an exchange filing by the commercial vehicle major.
The vehicles will feature the company’s iGen6 BS-VI technology and are built on an AIS 153-compliant chassis, designed to meet the latest safety and performance standards.
Ashok Leyland currently has over 21,000 buses operating in the TNSTU fleet, making it the state’s most preferred brand for public transport vehicles. The company said the new order will help replace and modernise part of the state’s existing fleet while improving passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
Confirming the development, Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head – MHCV, said the order reaffirmed the trust that Tamil Nadu’s transport corporations place in the company’s vehicles. “Tamil Nadu has always been an important market for us, and this order highlights our continued partnership with the state’s transport system,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mohan K, Head of Bus – MHCV, added that the new buses will come equipped with advanced safety and comfort features.
“We take pride in supporting the state’s public transport infrastructure with reliable and efficient vehicles that align with the government’s vision for modern, sustainable mobility,” he said.
