FSSAI On ORS: The Government of India has taken an important decision on ORS products prepared from lemon, salt and sugar. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an order in this regard. FSSAI has clearly said that any brand can label its product as Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) only if that formula is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

FSSAI order on ORS label

FSSAI issued an order on Tuesday (October 14). According to UNICEF, ORS is a solution of salt and sugar which is mixed in clean water to treat dehydration caused by any reason such as diarrhea or heatstroke.

ORS is considered very effective, especially in the treatment of diarrhea in children, but American health site Healthline says that it should be used only on the advice of a doctor, because salt can have toxic effects if used incorrectly.

What were the rules earlier?

The Central Government had earlier issued orders in this regard on 14 July 2022 and 2 February 2024. Allows adding the word ‘ORS’ to the brand name. However, the condition was that there should be a clear warning on the packet that it was not the WHO-recommended ORS formula. Also, this word was seen on the products of fruit juice, ready-to-drink and some non-carbonated drinks. Now the old conditions have been changed.

Pediatrician Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh praised this decision of the Central Government. Sharing the video on Instagram, he said, now no one will be able to put ORS label without WHO-recognition. Selling such products has also been stopped from today. Dr. Sivaranjani said that she had been raising her voice against mislabeling for a long time and thanked all those who supported this campaign.
