Three special types of codes are seen on brandy bottles. Like- VS, VSOP and XO. All these three codes have their own meaning, which is kept in mind while purchasing. Know why these codes are imposed and what they mean.
Wine expert Sonal Holland says, the codes VS, VSOP and XO written on the brandy bottle indicate its age. This shows how old the brandy is and what is its specialty. This quality keeps it in the premium category.
Meaning of Brandy's codes VS, VSOP and XO
1- VS: Very Special
It means very special. It was stored for 2 years before releasing. This also affects its flavour. Its taste is a little fruity and a little fiery. If understood in simple language, it is called the newest brandy.
2- VSOP: Very Superior Old Pale
It means Very Superior Old Pale. It is stored for a longer period as compared to very special codes. If VSOP is written on a brandy bottle, it means that it was stored for at least 4 years.
3- XO: Extra Old
This code written on brandy means Extra Old. It is generally used for premium brandy. If this code is written on a bottle, it means that it has been stored for at least 10 years. This is the reason why its taste and flavor are special.
Why store brandy for a long time?
Now the question arises that why brandy is stored for a long time and how does its price increase. The answer is that when brandy is stored for a long time i.e. for years, its taste, quality and aroma improves. This is the reason why extra old brandy is considered more expensive and premium.
The brandy is kept in oak wooden barrels. Chemicals like natural oils and tannins present in wood dissolve in the brand. These deepen its flavor and color. This enhances the taste and aroma of brandy. The taste of new brandy is bitter and strong. Due to being stored for a long time, its bitterness reduces and the flavor becomes better. Wine experts say, the older the brandy is, the more aromatic it becomes and the flavor increases.
Older brandy like 10, 20 or 50 years old is considered more valuable and premium. Thus, the longer the storage period, the more expensive it becomes. This is the reason why most companies, while branding brandy, mention its storage period, which makes it special.
