Cricket superstar Virat Kohli will be back on the field starting October 19, showcasing his skills in a 3-match ODI series against Australia. Kohli departed for Australia on October 15, but just a day earlier, on October 14, he visited Gurugram. During this visit, he went to the Wazirabad Tehsil and transferred the General Power of Attorney (GPA) of his Gurugram property to his elder brother, Vikas Kohli.

Off-Field Action Steals Headlines

While Kohli is known for his explosive cricketing performances, this off-field move brought him into the spotlight. By transferring the property rights via GPA, Kohli authorised his brother to handle legal matters related to the property. During his visit to the tehsil, he also posed for photos with the staff and signed autographs.

Recently, Kohli and his family shifted to England, which likely prompted him to delegate the property’s legal rights to his brother.

What is a General Power of Attorney (GPA)?

A General Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables a person (referred to as the principal) to give another person (referred to as the agent) the ability to manage their finances or legal affairs. This include managing real estate, making agreements, and carrying out financial transactions. All actions taken by the agent carry the same legal validity as if performed by the owner.

However, property ownership cannot be transferred by a GPA; a registered sale deed is necessary for that. When they are based overseas, many celebrities, athletes, and NRIs use GPAs to make it easier to manage their assets in India, according to legal experts.

Cricketing Career

Kohli, famously known as King Kohli, retired from T20 Internationals last year after winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados. He also announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 10, 2025. However, he remains active in the ODI format. Earlier this year, he played only in the Champions Trophy for Team India. Now, fans will see him in action from October 19 in the 3-match ODI series against Australia.
