Kim Kardashian has revealed the real reasons behind her divorce from Kanye West, describing at times a relationship she called “toxic” and marked by instability that left her feeling unsafe. Speaking on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in an episode released Wednesday, Kardashian opened up about her decision to end the marriage nearly three years after filing for divorce.

The reality star said her marriage to West, who legally changed his name to Ye, became challenging due to what she described as a “lack of stability.” “There was just a lot of things that I wouldn’t deal with,” she said, reflecting on her time with the controversial rapper and fashion designer.

Kardashian also expressed discomfort over how West spoke about her family. “I didn’t like the feeling of… someone talking bad about my kids’ grandmother, aunts,” she said, referencing her mother Kris Kardashian and sisters Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie. “If someone feels that way, then, you know, we shouldn’t be together.”

The couple married in a lavish 2014 ceremony in Italy, but Kardashian filed for divorce in February 2021 to prioritize the well-being of their four children, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.

Living with unpredictability

Kardashian recalled feeling unsafe not just physically, but emotionally and financially. She described moments when West, who has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and later autism, gave away all five of their Lamborghinis during episodes. “We had, like, five Lamborghinis, and I’d come home and they’d all be gone if he was in an episode. And I’d be like, ‘Oh, wait. Where’s all our cars? Like, my new car?’ And it would be like, oh, he gave them away to all of his friends,” she said.

“I didn’t know… what you’re going to get when you wake up,” Kardashian explained. “And that’s like a really unsettling feeling.”

She emphasized that her initial approach was to be supportive during West’s first mental health breaks. “People can say that there was, like, signs and maybe I wasn’t paying attention to them,” she said. “And I think when someone has their first mental break, you know, you wanna be super supportive and you wanna, like, help figure that out and you wanna really get into that with them and be there for them.”

Facing a reality she couldn’t change

Over time, Kardashian realized West was unwilling to make what she considered necessary changes. “But I think that… when someone isn’t willing to make changes that I think would be super healthy and beneficial, it makes it really hard to continue on in a relationship that can be toxic,” she said. She reflected on the complexity of leaving a marriage with children involved. “When you have kids, it’s definitely harder to leave than it is to stay. And it changes everyone’s life forever.”

She also spoke about the impact on her own mental health and parenting. “Once my mental health starts to get affected…then I can’t parent the way that I need to, and I can’t be present and focused. Then, there’s gotta be one of us that can, and I had to save myself in order to be a better mom for everyone. And I think when everyone’s older, they’ll be able to understand it and see that all,” Kardashian said.
