Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader (JKNC) Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said resolution of almost all the problems of Union Territory is in restoration of statehood urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfill his promise made in parliament as well as in the Supreme Court.

Abdullah addressed a presser in Jammu on completion of the one year of his government reiterating that he is committed to fulfill the promises made in the manifesto and opposition should wait patiently for the completion of the five year term of the government.

“We were hopeful that the Centre would fulfil its promise to restore statehood to J&K in the first year of our government, but it has not happened. We will continue to strive for it. We believe resolution of all the issues of J&K lies in restoration of statehood,” said Abdullah. The J&K CM said that the GoI, the prime minister and his team should fulfill the promises made to people in parliament and Supreme Court.

“I don’t believe in issuing threats and getting my work done. I still have the hope that without deterioration of the situation in J&K our issues will be resolved,” said Abdullah, adding, “BJP would say statehood would come from Delhi then why is it not being restored.” Abdullah reiterated that if the BJP wants NC to join hands with them for restoration of statehood then it is impossible for the next four years. Abdullah said that the NC government has “brought a resolution” for its restoration in the cabinet and also brought a resolution on special status in the assembly.

“When we sought votes from people, it was not for one year but for the full five-year term. People have started raising questions, but I want to tell them, please ask the questions after five years,” said Abdullah.

The J&K CM also announced the restoration of the biannual tradition of Darbar Move practice that was going on since Maharaja’s time. The Civil Secretariat used to shift every six months between summer capital Srinagar and winter capital Jammu. The practice was stopped in 2020, soon after the abrogation of Article 370 and 35 (A) in August 2019.

“Why was the darbar move stopped, which was a pre-1947 tradition. We have signed the file and the darbar move would be restored as per the old tradition,” said Abdullah. “Jammu was marginalized by the people who claim to be the true representatives of Jammu and the region's marginalization has been stopped by those people who were considered as anti Jammu,” he said.

The National Conference vice president said that the opposition parties including People’s Democratic Party and People’s Conference should vote for NC in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. “Abstaining from voting is also supporting BJP. The opposition should vote for the NC candidates as there is nobody else in fray other than the BJP,” said Abdullah. The PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has offered conditional support to NC in Rajya Sabha elections stating that the party should support their bills on Regularization of daily wagers and Land Rights & Regularisation Bill 2025.

“Let the Speaker of the assembly decide which bill will come in the assembly. Let the bill come to the house and we will not be a hurdle to any pro-people bill but we cannot intervene in the powers of the speaker at this time,” said Abdullah.
