WhatsApp is testing a new message limit to reduce spam
18 Oct 2025
WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, is testing a new feature to combat spam.
The company is looking at limiting the number of messages individual users and businesses can send to unknown people without receiving a response.
All sent messages would count against this monthly limit, which is yet to be determined.
Ongoing battle against spam
Spam reduction
The new feature is part of WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to tackle the spam problem on its platform.
The company has been introducing various tools over the last few years, such as blocking unwanted contacts from the Lock Screen, unsubscribing from marketing messages, and exiting unwanted groups.
It has also imposed restrictions on bulk messaging by new users.
How the new feature works
User notification
When a user or business nears the set limit, WhatsApp will show a pop-up alerting them about their remaining message quota.
This way, users can avoid hitting the cap and being blocked from sending messages altogether.
However, WhatsApp says that an average user won't hit this limit as these controls are aimed at reducing spam messages.
Testing different limits in multiple countries
Fact
WhatsApp is testing different limits for its new feature in multiple countries over the coming weeks. The company hopes to find the most effective way to reduce spam while not affecting the messaging experience of average users.
