Rain played a big role in the 2025 Women’s World Cup match between Pakistan and New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday. The bad weather caused the match to be stopped and made it the fourth time the tournament has been washed out at this venue. Because of this result South Africa has secured a place in the semifinals along with Australia. New Zealand’s chances to reach the semis are very low now. They are in fifth place on the points table with four points from five games. Pakistan’s hopes of moving forward are almost gone as they are at the bottom of the table with just two points both from matches that were stopped due to rain. New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided to let Pakistan bat first thinking about the rain. Pakistan’s openers Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail started slowly. Muneeba took advantage of some bad balls while Omaima stayed quiet. They added 30 runs together before Lea Tahuhu got Omaima out by trapping her in front of the wicket in the seventh over. In the next over Jess Kerr dismissed Muneeba who scored 22 runs off 26 balls with four boundaries. Sidra Amin and Aliya Riaz came in to bat next and tried to build a partnership. They kept the runs coming and Pakistan was 39/2 after the Power-play. They added 22 runs together before Lea Tahuhu took another wicket getting Sidra out for 9 runs in the 13th over. Right after that the rain started and stopped the game for one hour and 36 minutes reducing the match to 46 overs per side. When play resumed Pakistan was at 52/3 after 12.2 overs. Aliya and Natalia Pervaiz put together a short partnership of 24 runs before Eden Carson broke it in the 19th over. Natalia made a poor shot and was caught by Devine at long-on. Things got worse for Pakistan when their captain Fatima Sana was dismissed for 2 runs by Amelia Kerr in the next over. Pakistan was struggling at 80/5 in 19.5 overs. Aliya stayed steady while Sidra Nawaz the wicketkeeper joined her. The second rain break came when Pakistan was 92/5 in 25 overs. Unfortunately the rain got heavier and stopped the match again. At one point they planned to play a 36-over match but the rain returned and continued causing the fourth match washout at this ground. Pakistan who have not won any matches yet will play South Africa in Colombo on October 21. New Zealand will next play against India in Navi Mumbai on October 23.
