Most people start using their tumble dryers in autumn, but even with this handy appliance, clothes can still take ages to dry. Having your tumble dryer on for ages is not only noisy but can drive up the cost of electricity, and make it more likely you receive a hefty energy bill at the end of the month.

However, Karen Norman, a expert from Dang Good Carpet and Furnace Cleaning has shared making a tumble dryer quicker and more efficient is fairy simple, as you just need a towel. She said: "Hard pressed for time and want those clothes to dry quicker? Then add a clean dry towel in with that wet load. The dry towel will absorb some of the excess moisture. You can also add essential oil to the towel if you want your clothes scented."

Towels are highly absorbent, and adding one to your tumble dryer allows it to soak up moisture from the wet laundry, which helps the machine dry clothes quickly.

It also prevents clothes from clumping together, which improves airflow inside the tumble dryer and helps heat spread more evenly, so all garments dry at the same time.

Placing a towel in a tumble dryer is really easy but can get clothes dry in roughly 15 minutes, so laundry and energy bills do not have to be a major worry this autumn.

How to use a towel to dry clothes quickly in a tumble dryer

To begin, add a large and dry towel to the tumble dryer, and then place any wet clothes on top of it.

Set your tumble dryer to a quick cycle, then let it run for 15 to 20 minutes. After the time is up, open your tumble dryer and your clothes should be dry and ready to wear.

You can also add a few drops of essential oil to the towel if you wish, as a natural way to help clothes smell better.

However, it should be noted that certain oils can be harmful to cats and dogs so do your own research before use if you have pets.

Make sure not to overload your dryer; otherwise, you can overload the motor and risk your clothes coming out wrinkly. This method works best on small to medium laundry loads.

If clothes are still not dry, then you likely have too much lint built up inside the dryer, so clean it out and run it for five more minutes, and your laundry should be completely dry.
