Health Desk. Kidney stones are a common but extremely painful health problem, which sometimes causes sudden severe pain. This problem occurs when the minerals and salts present in urine combine to form small crystals, which gradually take shape and become stones.
Although small stones can sometimes be removed with home remedies, it is important to consult a doctor before adopting any remedy, especially if the pain is unbearable or there is blood in the urine. Here are 5 home remedies that can provide relief from stones in the initial stages and also reduce the chances of their formation in future:
1. Drink plenty of water
Drinking adequate amount of water is the first and most important step to get rid of stones. When you drink plenty of water throughout the day, urine flow increases, due to which small stones can easily pass out. Additionally, it dilutes the minerals present in the urine, which also reduces the chance of new stone formation.
Advice: Try to drink at least 2.5 to 3 liters of water a day.
2. Lemon juice
Lemon contains citric acid, which acts as citrate in the body. This element is helpful in breaking the stones into small pieces and preventing the formation of new stones. Lemon juice not only tastes good, but it also helps fight stones by increasing citrate levels in urine.
How to use: Squeeze half a lemon in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it 2-3 times a day.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
The acetic acid present in apple cider vinegar helps in dissolving the stones slowly. It also balances the acidity of urine, thereby slowing down the process of stone formation. Also, it can provide some relief in case of mild pain.
Usage Method: Mix 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and consume it once a day.
4. Horseradish pulses
Horse gram has been used for a long time in traditional Ayurveda for the treatment of stones. It contains compounds that can be helpful in dissolving the stones and removing them from the urinary tract.
How to take: Soak horse gram dal overnight and drink its water on an empty stomach in the morning or boil it and make soup and take it regularly.
5. Pomegranate juice
The antioxidant and diuretic elements found in pomegranate help in keeping the kidneys healthy. Pomegranate juice can prevent the formation of stones and assist in the process of expelling already existing stones.
Consumption method: Drink a glass of fresh pomegranate juice daily or make tea by drying pomegranate peels.
