The current 450 km range BrahMos missiles fly at very high speed. In May, they were used to attack Pakistan with Sukhoi-30 aircraft during Operation Sindoor. The Navy can easily upgrade these missiles to 800 km range on its warships, with just software and some technical changes. The Navy and the Army will adopt this new missile first, while the air-launched missile will take some more time to be ready.
Work on increasing the range of Astra Mark-2 missile
On the other hand, DRDO is working on increasing the range of Astra Mark-2 missile from 160 kilometers to more than 200 kilometers. The Indian Air Force has started inducting more than 280 Astra Mark-1 missiles, which can hit up to 100 kilometers. If the tests go well, production of Mark-2 can start in six months. The Air Force is planning to acquire 700 Mark-II missiles for Sukhoi and Tejas aircraft. Apart from this, Mark-3 missile with 350 km range is also being made, which will be ready in three years.
