New Delhi. India has made a historic achievement in the field of medical science. The country has developed its first antibiotic ‘Nafithromycin’ with completely indigenous technology, which is extremely effective in fighting serious respiratory infections. This medicine can prove to be a boon especially for those patients whose immunity is very weak, such as people suffering from cancer or patients with uncontrolled diabetes.
Information about this important discovery was given by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh. He told that this antibiotic has been completely designed, developed and tested in India. This not only shows India’s self-reliance in the medical field, but also highlights the strength of the country’s biomedical research at the global level.
Dr. Singh said that at present many antibiotics have lost their effectiveness, but nafithromycin shows effect on such infections on which old medicines have become ineffective. This is the reason why this antibiotic is being appreciated globally and its report has been published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.
Big leap in genetic research too
India has made significant progress not only in drug manufacturing but also in genetic research. So far the country has successfully sequenced more than 10,000 human genomes. The government aims to increase it to 10 lakh. A trial of gene therapy showed an improvement of 60-70%, which makes it clear that India is moving towards setting the future direction in gene-based therapy as well.
Strong funding for research
The government has set up the National Research Foundation (ANRF) to promote research and development, with a budget of ₹50,000 crore over the coming five years. Of this, ₹36,000 crore will be raised from the private sector. This funding will be helpful in taking medical, scientific and technological research to new heights.
