Desk: WhatsApp has taken a big decision regarding Artificial Intelligence. WhatsApp has decided to remove third party AI chatbots from its platform, this means that you will not be able to use AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Luzia and Poke on WhatsApp. Only the company’s own AI assistant will work on the app.
Meta has decided to exclude third party chatbots because the company has made a major change in its WhatsApp Business API policy. This new decision of WhatsApp will come into effect from January 15, 2026, that is, after this date you will not be able to use AI chatbots of companies like OpenAI, Luzia, Perplexity or Poke on WhatsApp.

Meta confirmed the change to TechCrunch, clarifying that the ban will not affect businesses that use customer service bots and AI. For example, banks, travel agencies or e-commerce sites that are using AI for customer support will not suffer any loss from this decision.
According to the company, the WhatsApp Business API was designed to help businesses communicate with customers, not for the distribution of AI models. Meta said that in the last few months it has been seen that developers are using the API to host general purpose assistants. Meta argues that hosting AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity puts pressure on WhatsApp’s systems because these chatbots send and receive large volumes of messages, upload media and conduct voice interactions.
