Some of the world’s biggest websites and apps faced massive internet outages on the first day of Diwali on Monday morning. These services included popular ones like Amazon, Google, Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite and Canva. Many users complained that apps and websites were not loading or working very slowly. The internet outage started around 9 am on Monday.

Thousands of users have filed complaints with Down Detector. According to reports, many apps suddenly stopped working and websites started showing error messages like “server down”.

This issue is directly to an outage in Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS is a cloud platform that provides servers, databases and storage to thousands of websites and apps. When there is a problem with this service, it affects major Internet companies around the world.

Problems for users around the world

The outage affected millions of users in Europe, Asia and the US. Many people expressed their distress by sharing memes and posts on social media. Some companies informed users through their official accounts that they are working to fix the issue. The outage affected many popular websites and apps. These include major apps like Snapchat, Slack, Signal, Tinder, and Canva. Streaming and e-commerce services such as Amazon, Amazon Music and Prime Video were also affected.

Gaming platforms such as Roblox, Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, Fortnite and Pokémon Go also experienced login and connection issues. Meanwhile, financial platform Coinbase assured users that “all funds are safe.” UK tax website HMRC and France’s SFR and Free Telecom were also hit. AWS released a statement saying it is working to resolve the technical issue and gradually restoring service. However, currently all websites and apps are not working normally. Slow speed and login issues persist in some places.
