Synopsis

Amazon experienced a massive outage affecting its e-commerce platform, AWS, and Alexa, impacting numerous third-party services like Snapchat and Venmo. Engineers identified a DNS issue as the root cause and are deploying fixes. While some U.S. services are showing signs of recovery, the UK is still experiencing high report volumes.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a massive outage Monday morning, taking down hundreds of popular websites and apps worldwide. The disruption impacted platforms like Snapchat, Venmo, Reddit, and government portals, leaving millions unable to access services. By afternoon, Amazon said it was seeing “significant signs of recovery.”

What caused major AWS outage?

Amazon, AWS, and Alexa users across the U.S. and U.K. faced widespread disruptions early Monday, as the company’s cloud operations went down. According to Amazon Web Services, engineers were “immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issues, and fully understanding the root cause.”

The disruption stemmed from the US-East-1 region in northern Virginia, one of AWS’s busiest data hubs. Early analysis points to a DNS issue, which functions as the internet’s “phone book,” matching web addresses to their correct IPs. The problem temporarily crippled DynamoDB, AWS’s data storage system, leading to outages across several platforms, from gaming to banking apps, as per a report by Tom's Guide.

Which services were hit the hardest due to AWS outage?

Reports on Downdetector soared to nearly 50,000 at the height of the outage around 7:50 a.m. Users reported difficulties connecting to Amazon’s mobile app, using Alexa, and accessing services like Snapchat, Venmo, Ring, Pokémon GO, and even banking portals, as per a report by Tom's Guide.

In the U.K., users also reported failures across government websites and entertainment platforms. However, AWS confirmed that “some services will have a backlog of work to work through, which may take additional time to fully process.”

Are systems recovering now?

By afternoon, AWS said it was seeing “significant signs of recovery” as engineers deployed multiple fixes simultaneously, reported The New York Times.

The number of outage reports on the AWS down detector is rapidly declining, reported The New York Times.

“The severity of the incident has been degraded,” Amazon stated, suggesting that while operations were returning to normal, some users might still face minor lags.

Downdetector reports show outages dropping below 1,000 for Amazon, with most services slowly coming back online. Reddit’s infrastructure, however, continues to experience “degraded performance,” backed by nearly 5,000 remaining outage reports.

Amazon advised users to “continue to retry any failed requests” and promised updates “as we have more information to share, or by 2:00 AM.” While most systems appear stable, engineers are still monitoring performance to prevent further disruptions, as per a report by Tom's Guide.

According to Amazon Web Services, the incident's seriousness has "degraded." It stated that there might still be a further lag as issues start to be resolved.

DownDetector, which monitors internet outages, says the disruptions on dozens of websites seem to be subsiding. Several websites, including Slack, Snapchat, Reddit, the website of the British government, and others, that had previously reported issues were experiencing fewer problems on Monday, as per a report by Tom's Guide.

Amazon Web Services said it was continuing to see recovery across most sites affected. “We continue to work towards full resolution and will provide updates as we have more information to share,” it said in a statement, reported The new York Times.

AWS’s massive influence on the global internet means that any glitch in its systems can ripple across industries, from streaming and gaming to finance and e-commerce. The Monday outage underscored just how interconnected online services have become, relying on a few major cloud providers to stay afloat.

With reports continuing to decline and systems stabilizing, Amazon says users can expect normal service to resume soon.
