End of an era: Govardhan Asrani passes away at 84

New Delhi: Veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, known for his iconic roles, passed away on Monday, October 20, at around 3 pm at the age of 84. He was admitted to Aroyaga Nidhi Hospital as he was suffering from lung issues.

Asrani was admitted to the hospital for the past four days, and his last rites were held at Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai. The tragic news was shared by his nephew Anand Asrani.

Govardhan Asrani’s early life

Asrani was born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and completed his educational studies at Rajasthan College. He worked as a voice artist at All India Radio to match his education expenses.

He arrived in Mumbai way back in 1962, coming with a dream of becoming an actor.

The veteran completed his filming course at the film institute in Pune in 1966 and got his first break in a Hindi film, ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan,’ a year later.

His most iconic role came in 1975 in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, as he played the character of a jailer, and his dialogue, ‘Hum angrezo ke zamane ke jailer hain,’ became a cult.

Later in 1977, Asrani wrote and directed the movie ‘Chala Murari Hero Banne.’ Apart from Sholay, the veteran played roles in major notable films such as Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and many more.

Asrani won his first major award in 1974 for best comedian in the Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar film. His last work in the mainstream was in 2025 in a JioHotstar web series, The Trial season 2, opposite Kajol.

The veteran acted in more than 350 movies in the Hindi cinema and played a vital role in the history of Indian cinema.
