The film industry got heartbreaking news on Diwali as veteran Bollywood actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani fondly known just as Asrani passed away at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. The sad news was confirmed by nephew Ashok Asrani. Spreading across laughter and warmth through his comic roles Asrani reportedly took his last breath on Monday afternoon at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu. His demise marks the end of an era for Indian cinema’s golden age of comedy. A Farewell on the Festival of Lights Whats even more heartbreaking is that just hours before his demise (around 2 PM) Asrani shared a Diwali post on his Instagram story wishing his fans on the festival. The post left his fans and the industry heartbroken and teary-eyed as it was his final goodbye post. However reports suggest that “it is likely his handle was kept updated by someone from his staff or family.” His last rites were held at the Santacruz Crematorium attended by close family members. Asranis Early Life and Career Over a career spanning more than five decades Asran was one of the most beloved faces especially in the comic roles of Indian cinema. He started his career in acting in 1960s. However his breakthrough moment came in the 1970s and soon he became one of Bollywood’s most reliable character actors. Some of his memorable performances were in films like Mere Apne Bawarchi Parichay Abhimaan Chupke Chupke Chhoti Si Baat and Rafoo Chakkar which earned him immense acclaim. Later he appeared in hit comedies such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa Dhamaal Bunty Aur Babli 2 R…Rajkumar All The Best and Welcome. Beyond Acting Besides acting Asrani also explored writing and direction. In 1977 he wrote directed and starred in Chala Murari Hero Banne which was highly appreciated. He later directed Salaam Memsaab (1979) and also worked in Gujarati cinema where he enjoyed equal popularity. One of his most memorable and iconic portrayals was that of a jail warden in Sholay which was released in 1975. Personal Life According to his manager Babu Bhai Thiba “Asrani passed away today at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital Juhu. He is survived by his wife sister and nephew.” He was married to Manju Asrani and the couple had no children.
